Certificates

While I worked on my Bachelors degree in International Relations, I also dedicated time to work on 2 certificates: one in German Language and Culture, and another in Human Rights and Political Transitions.  Both certificates strongly influenced my skill set and shaped my view on the world and helped me to become more aware of the world we live in today.

Certificate in Human Rights and Political Tranistions

The Certificate in Human Rights and Political Transitions introduces degree-seeking students to human rights as a concept of justice in a globalized, increasingly complex world. Students will learn about manifold forms of human rights violations, including crimes against humanity, legal and diplomatic developments of human rights protection, and political transitions as challenging processes of democratic institution building. The certificate is designed as an interdisciplinary learning experience and draws on courses taught in Criminal Justice, Political Science, International Relations, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Literature, Women and Gender Studies, Religious Studies, Economics and African and African Diaspora Studies. It also envisions that students partake in a hands-on learning experience related to human rights promotion and/or political transitions.

Certificate in German Language and Culture

Around the world, German is the third most commonly taught foreign language and after English the second most popular in Europe and in Japan. It is a leading language of science, literature, arts, philosophy and history. The knowledge of German is very important for increased employment opportunities – Germany is a major player in the European Union; it has the largest economy in the European Union and the third largest in the world. A combination of German knowledge with other specialties such as business and economics, engineering, medicine, legal training or bio-chemistry, opens wide career opportunities for the young people today, both in Europe as well as in the USA, with the high presence of German companies in this country. The students at FIU realize that their studies of German language and culture complement many other fields such as: journalism, international relations, political science, as well as arts, literature, architecture, philosophy, religion, music and film. The courses in German language and culture leading towards the Certificate would also complement other certificates such as European Studies Certificate and Certificate in National Security Studies offered at FIU.
